This was the first film for which I had enough money to hire a crew. The idea was to improvise a film with a “poetic,” rather than a narrative, structure, which really just meant improvising the content rather than storyboarding it extensively. The theme is North Dakota in late summer. My parents both grew up on farms in North Dakota, so I spent time in the summers there as a child, visiting my grandparents. The film is a string of loosely connected ideas, sometimes based on stories I heard from my parents, sometimes based on things I imagined I remembered. The sound, which I designed with Tom Hambleton, was meant to function as a parallel line of ideas, non-literal, creating its own series of associations.
